The correct sequence, and why order changes the outcome
- 01Air-seal the ceiling plane. Seal the attic hatch, pot lights, plumbing stacks, wiring penetrations, top plates, chimney chases and bath fan housings.
- 02Fix exhaust terminations. Bath fans and dryer vents that discharge into the attic get rerouted through the roof or the wall.
- 03Restore intake ventilation. Reopen soffit vents buried under existing insulation and install baffles to hold the required clearance at the eave.
- 04Insulate to full depth and full coverage. Coverage matters as much as depth. The perimeter above the top plate is where most Calgary attics run thin.
Reversing steps 1 and 4 makes winter moisture worse. Deeper insulation makes the roof sheathing colder, and colder sheathing collects more frost from the same leaking indoor air. That is the mechanism behind attic rain in Calgary.

Ventilation requirements Axion Roofing works to
The National Building Code, Alberta Edition, Section 9.19 sets the targets:
- Unobstructed vent area of at least 1/300 of the insulated ceiling area on standard slopes
- At least 1/150 on roofs with a slope less than 1 in 6 and on flat roofs
- At least 25% of the required openings at the top of the space and at least 25% at the bottom
- Openings distributed uniformly on opposite sides of the building
- At least 63 mm of clearance between the top of the insulation and the underside of the roof sheathing, with at least 25 mm of air space maintained at baffles

- Coverage gaps over the top plates and around the hatch
