Rubber Roofing in Calgary
Axion Roofing installs recycled rubber shingle roofs in Calgary. The City of Calgary names rubber among the most climate-resilient roofing types for Hailstorm Alley.
Axion Roofing installs recycled rubber shingle systems on Calgary homes that have already lost one roof to hail. Rubber shingles absorb impact by deforming instead of fracturing, which is the opposite of how an asphalt shingle fails.
The City of Calgary, in its Climate Ready measures for roofs, names rubber roofs as one of the most climate-resilient roofing types available to Calgary homeowners, alongside metal, slate and concrete tile.

Why rubber outperforms asphalt under hail
An asphalt shingle fails at the mat. Hail fractures the fibreglass mat under the granule surface, the fracture is invisible from the ground, and the shingle sheds granules and degrades over the following two or three seasons. The UL 2218 impact test recognizes exactly this: a shingle fails the test when tearing, fracturing, cracking or rupturing appears on the back of the shingle, not when the top surface dents.
A recycled rubber shingle absorbs the same strike elastically. The material rebounds, and no mat exists to fracture. That difference matters more in Calgary than almost anywhere else in Canada, because Calgary sits in Hailstorm Alley and Wikipedia’s entry on the region records the city as the hailstorm capital of Canada.

What rubber roofing costs against what it prevents
Rubber shingles carry a higher material cost per square than asphalt. The comparison that matters is against a second replacement. Calgary hailstorms produced $400 million in insured losses in July 2010, $1.5 billion in June 2020, and $3.25 billion on August 5, 2024, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Homeowners inside the storm tracks in 2020 and 2024 replaced the same roof twice inside four years.
The City of Calgary calculates that impact-rated Class 4 shingles pay for themselves in about five years and return roughly $3 for every $1 in added cost. Rubber sits above Class 4 asphalt on the resilience scale, and the payback logic runs the same direction.

What a rubber shingle roof looks like
Recycled rubber shingle systems are moulded from real slate and cedar shake originals, so the finished roof reads as slate or shake rather than as rubber. Profiles are available in slate and shake textures with a range of colours. Axion Roofing brings physical samples to the estimate, because photographs do not represent the surface texture accurately.

Where rubber roofing fits and where it does not
- 01
Rubber fits
homes inside repeat hail tracks, homes carrying a second or third insurance claim, character homes replacing cedar shake, and owners planning to hold the property for 20 or more years. - 02
Rubber does not fit
low-slope decks, which need a membrane system covered under flat roofing in Calgary, or budgets where an impact-rated asphalt system already solves the problem. In that case a Class 4 asphalt system installed under roof replacement in Calgary is the better spend.

Installation notes specific to rubber
Rubber shingle systems carry their own fastening pattern, underlayment requirement and hip and ridge detail. Installing them like asphalt voids the manufacturer warranty. Axion Roofing installs to the manufacturer specification and hands over the documentation at completion.
