Hail Roof Restoration in Calgary

Axion Roofing documents Calgary hail damage to adjuster standard and rebuilds the roof to an impact-rated specification so the next storm does not repeat the claim.

Axion Roofing documents hail damage on Calgary roofs, supports the insurance scope with photographic evidence, and rebuilds the roof to an impact-rated specification. Flori inspects the roof before the adjuster does, so the claim starts from a complete damage record instead of a windshield survey.

Calgary is the centre of Hailstorm Alley, the corridor running from High River north through Calgary and Red Deer to Lacombe. The August 5, 2024 storm generated $3.25 billion in insured losses and more than 130,000 claims, which the Insurance Bureau of Canada ranks as the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history. Alberta alone accounted for $4.1 billion of Canada’s severe weather losses in 2024.

How to identify hail damage on a Calgary roof

Hail damage is easy to miss and expensive to miss. Look for these markers:

  • Bruises. Press a suspected impact point. A bruised shingle feels soft, like a dent in drywall, because the mat underneath has fractured.
  • Granule loss in circular patterns. Random granule loss is age. Circular clusters of bare asphalt are impact.
  • Collateral evidence. Dented soft metals give the storm away first. Check gutter aprons, downspouts, roof vents, furnace flue caps, air conditioner fins and deck railings.
  • Splatter marks. Oxidation removed in a circular pattern on painted metal confirms the strike direction and size.
  • Damage across multiple slopes. Hail arrives with wind and hits one or two elevations hardest. Damage on the north and west slopes only is a hail signature, not wear.

Damage on soft metals with no visible roof damage still matters. Bruising shows up months later once the exposed mat weathers.

  2. Crew stripping shingles down slope acreage home02

The damaged field stripped off. Bruising rarely stays on one slope.

  3. Synthetic underlayment fully covering stripped roof slope03

Full underlayment coverage before the impact-rated field goes back down.

The restoration sequence Axion Roofing follows

  1. 01
Inspect and document. Axion Roofing photographs each slope, marks a test square on each elevation, counts impacts inside it, and photographs the collateral metals. The date of the storm goes on the record.
  2. 02
Report before the adjuster arrives. You hold the damage record before the insurer scopes the roof, which changes the conversation from opinion to evidence.
  3. 03
Meet the adjuster on site. Flori walks the roof with the adjuster and points to the documented impacts rather than arguing about them afterward.
  4. 04
Reconcile the scope. Adjuster scopes routinely omit ice and water membrane, ridge vent, drip edge and flashing that the code or the manufacturer requires. Those get raised as supplements.
  5. 05
Rebuild to an impact-rated specification. Axion Roofing replaces the roof with a UL 2218 Class 4 system or a rubber shingle system rather than reinstalling the shingle class that just failed.

Why Axion Roofing rebuilds to Class 4

UL 2218 Class 4 shingles withstand two strikes from a 2.00 inch steel ball at the same location without tearing, fracturing or cracking through the back of the shingle. Classes 1, 2 and 3 are tested with 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 inch balls.

The City of Calgary states in its Climate Ready measures for roofs that Class 4 shingles reduce the chance of damage by 15 times compared with standard asphalt shingles, pay for themselves in about 5 years, and save about $3 for every $1 in added cost. Many Alberta insurers also discount premiums on impact-rated roofs. Confirm the discount with your broker before you choose the shingle.

Hail hits more than the roof

Hail that bruises shingles also dents siding, splits vinyl, perforates eavestrough and cracks soffit. Insurers scope the full exterior, and repairing only the roof leaves covered damage on the table. Exterior restoration in Calgary covers siding, eavestrough, soffit, fascia and downspouts on the same claim and the same mobilization.
